Simple How To...

What You Need To Know

GUIDE: As A “STREAMER / Live TV” Unit……….

These units require a minimum of 2.0Mb/s (3.0Mb/s+ recommended) internet speed to function as a “Streamer” at 360p resolution “Streams” and can stream in excess of 100 000++ Video’s/Movies, 5 000++ TV Shows/TV Series, 60+ Live International Sports Channels (Do not confuse this with “Local Content Playback“). A guideline for stream quality to internet speed ratio is shown bellow to help identify “Roughly” what quality streams can be viewed with what speed internet connection.

Internet Speed vs. Stream Resolution “Guideline”:

2.0Mb/s ~ 144p – 360p
3.0Mb/s ~ 144p – 480p
4.0Mb/s ~ 144p – 720p Half HD
8.0Mb/s ~ 144p – 1080p Full HD
10.0Mb/s ~ 144p – 2160p Ultra HD

Take note, these are just “Guidelines” for stream quality to speed ratio (There are too many methods of encoding and compression to mention here, however, these are the most common and most frequently encountered scenarios on the internet at this current time). In most cases with “Slower” connection speeds (2Mb/s ~ 4Mb/s), video playback may require to be “Buffered” before playback commences, and may in certain circumstances vary due to codec and compression method used for video encoding such as x264, x265/HEVC, Container etc. (*.mp4 normally has a smaller file size due to duplicate scan lines being omitted, as well as x265 “the new flavour” of compression which is nearly 4 times smaller than x264 files and is excellent for streaming on S.A.’s pathetic line speeds ).

In most cases currently, the higher the definition of video, the larger the file size, so if you have a 10.0Mb/s internet connection with only 100GB of data (Just for comparison reasons) then playing 10 video’s encoded with *.mkv at 1080p may deplete all your data, so knowing how much data your service provider offers you on a monthly basis is good to know, as you can then limit the amount of data being used per movie/tv show by rather watching a smaller file size or a lower resolution or both, such as 240p – 720p or alternatively playing movies and series with x265 encoding will most definitely save on data. Obviously if you are on “Uncapped” data, then you need not worry, as all service providers (to my knowledge) do Not “Throttle” your bandwidth on “Streaming” which is exactly how these units operate (This is counted as streaming the likes of YouTube videos etc and not peer 2 peer).

Guide: As A “Stand Alone” Unit……….

These units can be used as “Stand Alone” units, providing you have “Content” (TV Shows &/Or Movies) on an external hard drive (USB Hard Drive), or on a device such as a PC or laptop connected to the same network as the “Tanix TX8/7“, NAS (Network Attached Storage) or file server (all this requires is to add a “Source” in KODI where you have stored your content), and if you do have internet, it will scan your content to a “Library” that will give you all the details of what every show/movie you currently have is all about, who acts in it, when it was released, run time, what the episode is about and much more).

If you do not have any internet, then you can still play the files you currently have on an external USB Hard Disk or network source to your TV, but with just much less information on what the episode/movie is about, and it would not add it to a “Library”, but can still be accessed through the Tanix TX8/7’s Android/KODI “Files Manager” or through KODI’s “Video’s” tabs and played from there on your TV.

In Addition……….

Since the Operating System is Android 6.0, you can connect a USB or wireless game controller to your Tanix TX8/7 and you can play every conceivable game available on the Google Play Store as this unit has more than enough under the hood to play even the highest specification Android games. Connect a wireless mouse and keyboard (Doesn’t necessarily have to be wireless but for added manoeuvrability) and you can turn your flat screen TV into a super sized computer, with which you can create &/or reply to E-Mails, surf the internet, watch YouTube video’s, work on Spread sheets, Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, view and edit PDF documents all while sitting in the comfort of your favourite arm chair in front of the TV……….. essentially, the sky is the limit.

If there is anything that is unclear, please “Google” it to affiliate yourself with what you do not know, as there are plenty of excellent examples of this on the world wide web.

Happy Streaming.
